Department of Microbiology

Introduction:
Microorganisms are fundamentals of life on Earth, shaping health, agriculture, the environment, and industry. Addressing global challenges such as antimicrobial resistance and emerging infectious diseases requires a deep understanding of microbiology. The Department of Microbiology is a leading department of the University, committed to excellence in teaching, research, and innovation.

The department is equipped with advanced laboratories for bacteriology, virology, mycology, cell culture, and molecular biology, providing a dynamic learning environment for undergraduate and postgraduate students. A highly qualified faculty comprising professors, associate professors, assistant professors, and lecturers brings extensive expertise and research experience.

Each year, the department attracts outstanding students to its bachelor’s, and master’s programs, offering equal opportunities to all. Graduates are serving with distinction in academia, industry, and public institutions worldwide. Through a comprehensive curriculum focused on research skills and critical thinking, the department nurtures future microbiologists prepared to meet global challenges.

Department Mission:
Our primary mission is to train students in the isolation and characterization of microorganisms of veterinary, medical, and environmental importance, with special emphasis on serological and molecular diagnostics, biologics development, and industrial microbiology.

Objectives:

  1. To train students and researchers in the isolation, characterization, and diagnosis of microorganisms affecting human, animal, and environmental health, following the one health approach, with emphasis on emerging and re-emerging diseases.
  2. To develop and evaluate biologics, vaccines, diagnostic tools, and therapeutic approaches, along with strategies for biosafety, biosecurity, and mitigation of mycotoxicosis in animals.
  3. To explore immunogenetics, immunotherapy, immunomodulation, and related fields for better understanding, prevention, and management of infectious diseases.

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs):
Graduates of the Department of Microbiology will be able to:

  1. Identify and characterize microorganisms of veterinary, medical, and environmental importance, following the one health approach.
  2. Apply microbiological, molecular, and immunological techniques for disease diagnosis and research.
  3. Develop and evaluate biologics, diagnostics, and strategies for disease prevention and control.
  4. Implement biosafety, biosecurity, and mycotoxin management practices in laboratory and field settings.
  5. Conduct independent research on host–pathogen interactions and immunological responses.

Research Alignment with Objectives:

  1. Microbial Identification & control of Emerging and Re-emerging Diseases:

Research focuses on isolation and characterization of pathogens in humans, animals, and the environment, aligning with the objective of advancing microbiological knowledge and skills.

  1. Biologics & Disease Control:

Studies on vaccines, diagnostics, antimicrobial agents, biosafety, biosecurity, and mycotoxin management support the objective of promoting innovation in disease prevention and control.

  1. Immunological Research:

Investigations in immunogenetics, immunotherapy, immunomodulation, and host–pathogen interactions fulfill the objective of fostering research in immunology and infectious diseases.
