The Department of Islamic Studies is one of the pioneering departments of the Islamia University of Bahawalpur. It originated from the former Jami'a Abbasia & Jami'a Islamia functioning from 1925 to 1975. Eminent scholars of the sub-continent like Maulana Shams-Ul-Haq Afghani, Maulana Ahmad Sa'eed Kazmi, Maulana Abdur Rasheed No'mani, Prof. Dr. Saghir Hassan Ma'sumi & Prof. Mian Manzoor Ahmad have served this Department for a long time.
This department offers postgraduate programs such as MPhil and PhD. PhD Program in Islamic Studies was offered by the Department in 1989 and MPhil Classes were started in 1997. Lectures, seminars, and workshops are being arranged in the Department on regular basis to broaden the horizon of students. The graduates of the Department are serving in different Schools, Colleges, Universities, Armed forces, and Religious institutions of the Country & abroad. Some foreign students have also completed their studies at MA & PhD levels and are serving in their respective countries. To facilitate and educate the students of the region, MPhil Program in Islamic Studies through distance learning is being started by the Department from current academic session. Modern Center of Excellence in Islamic Learning is also part of the Department, which has three disciplines: MA Islamic Studies with Specialization in Quran & Tafseer, Hadith & Seerat and Comparative Study of World Religions. In near future, the Department plans to start a new discipline of Shariah Law (Fiqh) & B.A. (Hons) in Islamic Studies.
The Department of Islamic Studies houses Dar-ul-Ifta (Juristic Opinion Center) which provides guidance to the community of the region on different issues in the light of Quran & Sunnah.
