Department of Geography and Geoinformatics
Introduction
Department of Geography was established in 1985 at the Islamia University of Bahawalpur, serving as a pioneer in spatial sciences in South Punjab. Since its inception, the department has steadily evolved into a hub of academic excellence, producing graduates who serve in key positions in industry and academia. The prominent serving departments include Geological Survey of Pakistan, Pakistan Meteorological Department, the Bureau of Statistics, Urban Unit, Multinational companies, Pakistan Agricultural Research Council, Punjab Urban Land System Enhancement, Multinational companies, and numerous educational and research institutions. With recent advancements in geospatial and satellite data applications, the department has evolved into the Department of Geography and Geoinformatics, leveraging specialized expertise in Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to meet emerging academic and industry needs. Currently, department is offering a range of academic programs, including ADP in Geography, BS Geography, BS in GIS and Remote Sensing, MPhil, and PhD in Geography.
Mission Statement
The mission of the Department of Geography and Geoinformatics is to advance knowledge and innovation in spatial sciences by integrating geographic theory, geospatial technologies, and cutting-edge tools such as Remote Sensing, GIS, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Machine Learning (ML). Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Sher Muhammad Malik, the department emphasizes innovative and practical oriented research to meet academic, research, and industrial demands. Highly qualified faculty of the department is actively engaged in fostering national and international collaborations, teaching credentials with impactful research, guiding students to explore and address complex issues of urbanization, climate change, disaster management, sustainable development, and spatial data analysis. With academic and research excellence, the department is meeting global standards and addressing the evolving demands of geospatial science within a multidisciplinary framework.

Program Mission
To provide a world-class, intellectually vibrant, and highly interdisciplinary environment where students design and execute an original project that pushes the boundaries of spatial, human, or physical environmental science.The program aims to develop visionary researchers and geospatial scientists who are equipped with advanced theoretical knowledge, technical expertise, and a problem-solving approach. Our PhD program seeks to bridge the gap between science and society empowering researchers to lead innovations in geographic and geoinformatics research, contribute to data-driven governance and sustainable development.
Program Objectives
- To develop independent and solution-oriented researchers who can design and lead impactful geographical and geospatial research addressing environmental challenges in Pakistan and South Asia, aligned with global scientific priorities and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
- To build technical excellence in emerging applications of Remote Sensing, GIS, Spatial Data Science, and Geospatial Artificial Intelligence empowering the researchers to develop scalable tools and models for climate resilience, smart agriculture, disaster risk management, public health, and urban sustainability, according to the national development needs.
- To foster excellence in scientific communication and research leadership by training scholars for research presentations at international conferences, seminars, symposiums, and high-impact academic publishing, competitive proposal/grant writing for acquisition of national and international research fundings.
- To strengthen academia, industry & policy integration by encouraging PhD scholars to engage in applied research, industrial collaboration, consultancy, and government-driven geospatial projects, fostering innovation and evidence-based decision-making.
- To emphasize ethical research practices, international collaboration, open science, communication, and transferable skills preparing PhD graduates to contribute meaningfully to academia, government, NGOs, and private-sector innovation in Pakistan and beyond.
Program Outcomes
- PhD researchers will independently conduct original, interdisciplinary geospatial research generating scientific knowledge which will directly supports policy formulation, environmental governance, and sustainable development planning in Pakistan and global scale.
- Researchers will be able demonstrate strong technical proficiency in using modern geospatial skills such as advanced remote sensing, GIS, and machine learning models for practical utilization in research projects and solving industrial problems
- PhD graduates will be able to demonstrate their research ability through conference presentation and publishing in high-impact peer-reviewed journals, and secure competitive project funding through well-developed research proposals aligned with institutional, national (e.g., HEC, PSF), and international (e.g., Horizon Europe, UNEP) funding priorities.
- Researchers will be able to actively contribute to industrial innovation and national policy frameworks, producing spatial products, patents, reports, and decision-support tools that address real-world challenges in agriculture, public health, environment, urban planning, and disaster risk reduction.
- PhD graduates will possess cross-cutting competencies in project management, science-policy communication, stakeholder engagement, and entrepreneurship. It will enable them to pursue diverse career pathways in academia, research, industry, and as an entrepreneur.
