Seminar on World Heritage Day 2026 at the Islamia University of Bahawalpur

A grand seminar was organized on the occasion of World Heritage Day under the auspices of the Department of Archaeology and the Culture and Heritage Research Center at The Islamia University of Bahawalpur.
Observed annually on April 18 across the globe, World Heritage Day serves as a reminder to humanity that the historical, cultural, and natural heritage present on Earth is not confined to any single nation or region, but is a shared legacy of all mankind. This day raises awareness that ancient civilizations, historical monuments, traditions, and cultural values are integral parts of our collective identity. Their preservation is essential not only for the present generation but also for those to come. On this occasion, various academic, cultural, and awareness activities are held worldwide to highlight the importance of heritage and to instill a sense of responsibility for its protection.
In this context, a comprehensive and thought-provoking seminar was held at The Islamia University of Bahawalpur, where active participation from faculty members and students underscored the significance of the subject.
The seminar was presided over by the distinguished academic Prof. Dr. Amir Sohail, Dean Faculty of Arts and Languages while the keynote address was delivered by renowned historian Prof. Dr. Shahid Hassan Rizvi Ex Chairman Department of History. The event was organized and hosted by the Head of the Department of Archaeology, Dr. Khalil Ahmad, who played a pivotal role in ensuring the success of this scholarly gathering.
In his presidential address, Dr. Amir Sohail emphasized that archaeology is not merely the study of the past, but a vital means of understanding our cultural roots. He particularly highlighted the rich heritage of Cholistan, noting that with proper preservation and development, the region has the potential to emerge as a significant tourist destination, contributing to economic growth and enhancing Pakistan’s positive image internationally.
In his keynote speech, Prof. Dr. Shahid Hassan Rizvi remarked that vibrant and progressive nations are those that remain connected to their past and safeguard their heritage. He stressed that cultural heritage forms the foundation of national identity, and without it, no society can maintain its true essence.
Speaking on the occasion, the organizer Dr. Khalil Ahmad shared that the Department of Archaeology is actively engaged in ongoing research, particularly focusing on the archaeological sites of Cholistan. He encouraged students to take a keen interest in research, stating that the younger generation holds the key to preserving and promoting heritage at a global level.
On this occasion, Dr. Muhammad Yasir shed light on the importance of heritage from an Islamic perspective. He stated that Islam encourages reflection on historical events and the preservation of historical landmarks, which fosters intellectual growth and societal awareness.
The participation of students from various departments clearly indicated that the younger generation is increasingly becoming conscious of their historical and cultural heritage. This seminar proved to be not only intellectually enriching but also instrumental in strengthening the sense of connection with the past and the commitment to its preservation.
Overall, the seminar was a successful and meaningful initiative that not only highlighted the significance of heritage but also reinforced collective awareness regarding its protection.

دی اسلامیہ یونیورسٹی آف بہاولپور میں شعبہ آرکیالوجی اور کلچر اینڈ ہیریٹیج ریسرچ سنٹر کے زیر اہتمام ورلڈ ہیریٹیج ڈے کے موقع پرایک شاندار سیمینار کا انعقاد۔
دنیا بھر میں ہر سال 18 اپریل کو منایا جانے والا عالمی یومِ ورثہ (ورلڈ ہیریٹیج ڈے) انسانیت کو اس حقیقت کی یاد دہانی کراتا ہے کہ زمین پر موجود تاریخی، ثقافتی اور قدرتی ورثہ کسی ایک قوم یا خطے تک محدود نہیں بلکہ پوری دنیا کی مشترکہ میراث ہے۔ یہ دن ہمیں اس شعور سے آشنا کرتا ہے کہ قدیم تہذیبوں کے آثار، تاریخی عمارات، روایات اور ثقافتی اقدار دراصل ہماری اجتماعی شناخت کا حصہ ہیں، جن کا تحفظ نہ صرف موجودہ نسل بلکہ آنے والی نسلوں کے لیے بھی ناگزیر ہے۔ اس موقع پر دنیا بھر میں علمی، ثقافتی اور آگاہی مہمات کے ذریعے لوگوں کو اپنے ورثے کی اہمیت اور اس کی حفاظت کی ذمہ داری کا احساس دلایا جاتا ہے۔
اسی سلسلے میں اسلامیہ یونیورسٹی بہاولپور میں شعبہ آرکیالوجی اور کلچر اینڈ ہیریٹیج ریسرچ سنٹر کے زیر اہتمام ایک جامع اور فکر انگیز سیمینار منعقد کیا گیا۔ جس میں اساتذہ اور طلبہ کی بھرپور شرکت نے اس موضوع کی اہمیت کو اجاگر کیا۔
تقریب کی صدارت ممتاز ماہرِ تعلیم پروفیسر ڈاکٹر عامر سہیل ڈین فیکلٹی اف ارٹس اینڈ لینگویجز نے کی، جبکہ کلیدی خطاب کے لیے معروف مؤرخ پروفیسر ڈاکٹر شاہد حسن رضوی سابقہ چیئرمین ڈیپارٹمنٹ اف ہسٹری کو مدعو کیا گیا۔ سیمینار کی میزبانی اور انتظامی ذمہ داریاں شعبہ آرکیالوجی کے سربراہ ڈاکٹر خلیل احمد نے انجام دیں، جنہوں نے اس علمی نشست کو منظم اور بامقصد بنانے میں کلیدی کردار ادا کیا۔
اپنے صدارتی خطاب میں پروفیسر ڈاکٹر عامر سہیل ڈین فیکلٹی اف ارٹس اینڈ لینگویجز نے اس امر پر زور دیا کہ آثارِ قدیمہ کا مطالعہ محض ماضی کا جائزہ نہیں بلکہ یہ ہماری تہذیبی جڑوں کو سمجھنے کا ایک مؤثر ذریعہ ہے۔ انہوں نے بالخصوص چولستان کے تاریخی ذخیرے کو اجاگر کرتے ہوئے کہا کہ اگر ان آثار کی مناسب دیکھ بھال اور ترقی کی جائے تو یہ خطہ سیاحت کے حوالے سے نمایاں مقام حاصل کر سکتا ہے، جس سے نہ صرف معیشت کو فروغ ملے گا بلکہ عالمی سطح پر پاکستان کا مثبت تشخص بھی ابھرے گا۔
مہمانِ خصوصی پروفیسر ڈاکٹر شاہد حسن رضوی نے اپنے خطاب میں کہا کہ زندہ قومیں وہی ہوتی ہیں جو اپنے ماضی سے جڑی رہتی ہیں اور اپنے ورثے کو سنبھال کر رکھتی ہیں۔ انہوں نے اس بات پر زور دیا کہ ثقافتی ورثہ دراصل ہماری قومی پہچان کی بنیاد ہے، اور اس کے بغیر کوئی بھی معاشرہ اپنی اصل شناخت برقرار نہیں رکھ سکتا۔
تقریب کے منتظم ڈاکٹر خلیل احمد نے اپنے خطاب میں بتایا کہ شعبہ آرکیالوجی اس خطے، خصوصاً چولستان کے آثارِ قدیمہ پر مسلسل تحقیق میں مصروف ہے۔ انہوں نے طلبہ کو تحقیق کے میدان میں آگے بڑھنے کی ترغیب دیتے ہوئے کہا کہ نوجوان نسل ہی اپنے ورثے کی اصل محافظ ہے اور انہی کی کاوشیں اسے عالمی سطح پر متعارف کروا سکتی ہیں۔
اس موقع پر ڈاکٹر محمد یاسر نے اسلامی نقطۂ نظر سے ورثے کی اہمیت پر روشنی ڈالی۔ انہوں نے کہا کہ اسلام انسان کو ماضی کے واقعات سے سبق حاصل کرنے اور تاریخی نشانیوں پر غور و فکر کرنے کی تلقین کرتا ہے، جس سے نہ صرف فکری بالیدگی حاصل ہوتی ہے بلکہ معاشرتی شعور بھی بیدار ہوتا ہے۔
سیمینار میں مختلف شعبہ جات سے تعلق رکھنے والے طلبہ و طالبات کی شرکت اس بات کا واضح ثبوت تھی کہ نئی نسل اپنے تاریخی اور ثقافتی ورثے کے حوالے سے سنجیدگی سے سوچ رہی ہے۔ یہ علمی نشست نہ صرف معلوماتی اعتبار سے اہم ثابت ہوئی بلکہ اس نے نوجوانوں میں اپنے ماضی سے جڑنے اور اسے محفوظ رکھنے کا جذبہ بھی مزید تقویت دی۔
مجموعی طور پر یہ سیمینار ایک کامیاب اور بامقصد کوشش تھی، جس نے نہ صرف ورثے کی اہمیت کو اجاگر کیا بلکہ اس کے تحفظ کے لیے اجتماعی شعور کو بھی مضبوط کیا۔
