About Us

Microorganisms are fundamental to life on Earth, influencing health, agriculture, the environment, and industry. Addressing global challenges such as antimicrobial resistance and emerging infectious diseases requires a strong understanding of microbiology. The Department of Microbiology is a leading department of the University, committed to excellence in teaching, research, and innovation.

The department has advanced laboratories for bacteriology, virology, mycology, cell culture, and molecular biology, providing a strong learning and research environment for undergraduate and postgraduate students. Its dynamic, highly qualified, and internationally trained faculty is actively engaged in teaching medical and veterinary microbiology in the BS Microbiology, M.Phil. Microbiology, and DVM programs at IUB, while contributing diverse expertise to teaching and research.

The department currently offers the four-year BS Microbiology and M.Phil. Microbiology (18 years of education) programs and provides equal learning opportunities to students. Faculty members are actively involved in collaborative research with departments across IUB and with other national and international universities. Through a curriculum emphasizing practical skills, research, and critical thinking, the department prepares graduates to contribute effectively to academia, industry, public institutions, and the broader scientific community. The department is also committed to expanding its academic and research portfolio through the introduction of a PhD in Microbiology in the near future.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Department of Microbiology is to provide internationally competitive teaching and research through conducive, learning-based academic and practical modules in the diverse areas of microbiology, with emphasis on microbial diseases, diagnostic techniques, biologics, and disease prevention and control, thereby fostering scientific knowledge, research skills, and critical thinking among students.

Vision Statement

The vision of the Department of Microbiology is to become a Centre of Excellence in Microbiology, emerging as a leading national and internationally recognized department for quality education, innovative research, and scientific advancement in microbial sciences.
