About Us

The Department of Breeding and Genetics is an active component of Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Sciences the Islamia University of Bahawalpur. The disciplines like genetics, biometry, mathematics and statistics constitute the discipline of Animal Breeding and Genetics. The animal breeding and genetics expert utilizes the differences and resemblance among the individuals as a tool for set up of breeding goals to meet selection targets. With the application of knowledge of quantitative genetics and molecular genetics, a breeder aims to improve performance of next generations based on available pedigree and performance records.

The department has the capability for teaching and research in field of population and quantitative genetics, calculating gene and genotypic frequencies based on available data, estimation of genetic parameters like heritability, repeatability and genetic correlations, measurement of inbreeding and relationship co-efficient, ranking of animals based on EBV,s and use of computer softwares specially designed for discipline of animal breeding and genetics. The departmental facilities are being upgraded keeping in view the course requirements of master and PhD degree programs.

In future the department aims strengthen the quantitative genetics laboratory for classical genetic work/studies and other molecular genetics laboratory to conduct research at molecular level and target the genes responsible for traits of economic importance in farm animals. The departmental focus of research in future has been set to conduct research of applied nature for genetic improvement of cattle, buffalo, sheep, goat and poultry, hence increase milk, meat and egg production in the country to strengthen human food chain.

Mission Statement

The mission of Department of Animal Breeding and Genetics is to enhance production potential of farm animals and increase per unit productivity in terms of milk, meat, mutton and other products through appropriate breeding plans and application of quantitative and molecular genetic technologies and strengthen human food chain for building a healthy nation.

Vision Statement

The vision of the program is not only to produce a specialized work-force in the field of genetics to take on specialized positions and research in this field but also to contribute to our country by creating awareness regarding genetic diseases and conducting impactful research.
