Siraiki is an ancient language possessing an extensive literary heritage. The poetic tradition of this language has a long history of one thousand years. The Department of Siraiki was established in 1989. Presently, MA in Siraiki is being offered.
The courses of MA Siraiki are designed with an emphasis on modern, social and literary thoughts along with special studies of Khawaja Fareed and mystic tradition of the language. Since the last academic year, a revised syllabus has been implemented, in which three new subjects are a part of the scheme. A compulsory subject based on the historical background, the art and culture of the area and two other optional subjects, out of which one is based on Radio/TV journalism and the other is based on sociology and anthropology with special reference to Siraiki literature. This new move and unique addition in the syllabus has made this course job-oriented and upgraded the standard of curriculum in accordance with the needs of modern era. To meet the modern needs of research, a Journal of Siraiki Language & Literature is being published by the department since 2007.
Recently, the Government of Punjab has created 35 Posts of Lecturers in the Subject of Siraiki in three divisions of Southern Punjab. The subject will be introduced at the Intermediate level from the next academic session. Initially, 35 Colleges of three divisions, namely Multan, Bahawalpur & Dera Ghazi Khan, will offer the new subject.
