Department of Horticulture Sciences

Department of Horticultural Sciences (DHS) was emanated under the umbrella of Faculty of Agriculture & Environment. The University College of Agriculture & Environmental Sciences (UCA&ES) was established in 2005 and is the integral constituent of the Islamia University of Bahawalpur and later UCA&ES is converted to Faculty of Agriculture & Environmental Sciences (FA&ES The purpose was to produce graduates and post graduates who are capable to contribute in the development of horticulture sector in the Southern Punjab (SP) where the growers establish gardens as major or supplementary business because they continuously facing the problem of low production of field crops due to water scarcity. Moreover, they excel their potential around the globe. Horticultural crops have potential to cash the agro-climatic resources of SP to get sustainability in production and to reduce the malnutrition issues in human diet. The region is famous for the production of excellent mango fruits all over the world, moreover, area of kinnow, date palm, guava and grapefruit production is extending in the region. Climatic condition of this region is suitable for the production seeds of vegetable and annual flower. Bahawalpur is declared as the valley of grape fruits and the trend is developing to grow other minor fruits like strawberry, pomegranate and jujube etc. All type of summer and winter vegetables, annual flowers especially, rose flowers are producing on vast area of southern Punjab, the area has potential to explore various medicinal plants too.

The Department of Horticultural Sciences is offering following degree programs

  1. BSc (Hons) Agriculture-Horticulture
  2. BSc (Hons) Agriculture / BS Seed Science & Technology
  3. MSc (Hons) Agriculture-Horticulture
  4. MSc (Hons) Agriculture / MS Postharrest Science and Technology
  5. PhD Horticulture

The department is focusing on a wide range of research areas such as high and ultra-high density orchard management on drip irrigation system, hydroponic horticulture, fruit and ornamental plant nurseries, vegetable and its seed production under field and protected envrionment, conservation of pomegranate, citrus, date palm, grapes and rose germplasm. The main emphasis is given to the farmer-oriented problems regarding orchard management and postharvest technology. Department of Horticultural Sciences has well established laboratories and all the degree programs are approved from HEC and council. The students have an excellent facility for field experimentation with allotted land of 80 Acres in master plan of IUB in the Agricultural Research Farm at the walking distance from the department. The department draws its strength through cooperation and coordination with other agricultural research/ teaching institutes. Many graduates and postgraduate students have completed their degree and are serving in various national and international organizations.

The faculty strives to provide an environment in which students can reach their potential as individuals and as professionals. We strive for not only growth in factual knowledge and research skills but also a broader intellectual growth. The funded research projects (05) by HEC and other agencies are also in the credit of our faculty. The faculty is also committed to develop the technologies and methodologies of fruit and vegetable production which are economically feasible, environmentally safe and in easy access to the public. Faculty involved in landscape design and plantation in the campus. The faculty members have published many scientific research papers, books, conference papers at national and international level. The faculty members are highly qualified and have research experience in specialized area of Horticulture from different countries. All the faculty members have PhD degree. The students are welcome to join the research-oriented department for their future career with excellent theoretical as well as practical training in the field of Horticultural Sciences.
