The Department of Media Studies was established in 1985 by offering one year Post-Graduate Diploma in Journalism. MA Classes were started in 1990. Since then, more than 1500 students have graduated and most of them are working in different Media Organizations, Public Relation Departments, Academic Institutions and NGOs. More than ten students have earned their MPhil degrees. The Department also offers a PhD Program. Six scholars have been awarded PhD degrees while ten others are in the process of writing their dissertations.
FM Radio Station has also been functioning since 2006. It provides a platform to the students to practice their skills at their home institution. Keeping in view the practical learning of the students a Video Editing and Graphic Animation Lab (VEGA Lab) has been established with a donation of two video cameras, 15 computers with necessary video software received from a London based International NGO.
Internship Program is an integral part of the study scheme which provides the opportunity of practical training to the students. More than 2000 books on various courses of Media Studies are available in the Sir Sadiq Muhammad Khan Library of the University. A computer lab comprising of 30 computers with internet facility has been provided to the students as well as faculty members. The establishment of a TV studio and a Print Media Lab are under progress.
